My First Time Making Gingerbread

Welcome to the eighteenth day of Blogmas with Sara Laughed, where I’m blogging every day ’til Christmas Day. Head over to my Blogmas calendar to see the full collection, or click on the gift tag below!

Today’s post is short and sweet — literally! I have to admit that I’m losing some of my steam with Blogmas, and since this post is based on someone else’s recipe, there isn’t as much to share as usual, so I’m mostly sharing pictures and the quick story behind them. My next posts should have a little more meat to them, but in the meantime I hope this’ll do!

I didn’t grow up making gingerbread, but I remember reading about gingerbread holiday traditions in the American Girl books — specifically Samantha’s holiday book, which included some kind of magnificent gingerbread mansion (if I remember correctly). Because of that, I’ve always associated gingerbread with Christmastime, even if it wasn’t necessarily linked for my own family. This year, I was excited to make gingerbread myself for the first time. I used this recipe from Genius Kitchen.

I had a pretty hard time getting these to be chewy and not too hard, which may mean that I baked them for too long. In any case, they tasted great, and Ken and I had a lot of fun decorating them — though his turned out much better than mine!

Ken made the above Santa and ringing bell. I made Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, because no holiday is complete without a hero with bulging iced biceps.

That’s all I’ve got for now — check in tomorrow for a more in-depth blog post! And let me know in the comments if gingerbread is a part of your holiday celebration!
