Do you know what’s great about traveling? Seeing new places and getting away from reality. Do you know what sucks about traveling? Packing. I used to really dislike packing because I was the queen of over packing. I’m talking about having two outfits for every day I was gone plus a thousand accessories.

This changed when I went on a trip to Greece and Italy last year. Nine days and seven cities; I was more than excited to get my vacation started. As I was planning all of the tourist attractions, I also planned the ultimate outfit guide. Considering I was limited to just one carry-on and a backpack, I really had to take into thought everything I was packing. Everything had to be accounted for and organized just to prevent my over packing tendency.

This is what I learned from my experience.

  1. Write down everything you will be packing with you.
  2. Choose articles of clothing within the same color scheme
  3. Basic/neutral colors will be your best friend/base of the outfit
  4. But make sure you pack pops of color that are interchangeable
  5. Plan outfits ahead of time and write them down

For example, if you have a specific blouse that you know would look amazing with a skirt you have, try and find a way to dress it down with jeans. This way, you only pack three items but have two outfits. I also really like this method of packing because it pushes your creativity with outfit choices and you may come up with choices you would have never thought of before. Below I have my own example of this method.

The first outfit centers on the oxford shirt, or the base. Because of the simplicity of the shirt, I am able to combine it with different elements to make each outfit look completely different. Tucking in the shirt gives me a “put together” and clean look.

When I have the shirt paired with the dress, it looks completely different. Here, I’m trying to go for a more laid back look with the shirt tied at my waist. You just way want to consider wearing the shirt tucked in first because of the wrinkle factor once it’s tied at my waist. And always consider accessories that will go with any outfit. I could have worn the hat for either outfit, which make is very efficient.

When planning for a trip, be sure to consider your itinerary and weather. Is your location in Greece? Great! But consider the fact that Greece is a peninsula and can get windy, which could mean cold nights. Going to Florida for a family trip? Fantastic! Take into account the random thunderstorms that last no more than thirty minutes, and don’t pack all white.

It’s the little things you have to consider, but with practice, you’ll get the hang of it.

Best of luck,
Sally Salado
